City Rationale
At the heart of Episode 8 (Lestrygonians), is Leopold Bloom’s search on foot for somewhere to eat in the centre of Dublin – he settles eventually for a gorgonzola cheese sandwich that he cuts into small sections and a glass of white wine for digestion. Walking and food are also at the heart of Galician culture. The world-famous Camino de Santiago – for many of whose pilgrims fasting and hunger are an integral part of the experience – passes through Lugo before finishing in Santiago de Compostela. Galicia itself has a uniqely distinctive cuisine, celebrated in particular for its seafood, due to its long Atlantic coastline, its meat and cheeses, due to the surrounding mountains, and its white wine, due to its hillside terraces and cooler climate.
Ulysses Episode
Bloom’s thoughts are peppered with references to food as lunchtime approaches. He meets an old flame, hears news of Mina Purefoy’s labour, and helps a blind boy cross the street. He enters the restaurant of the Burton Hotel, where he is revolted by the sight of men eating like animals. He goes instead to Davy Byrne’s pub, where he consumes a gorgonzola cheese sandwich and a glass of burgundy, and muses upon the early days of his relationship with Molly and how the marriage has declined: ‘Me. And me now.’ Bloom’s thoughts touch on what goddesses and gods eat and drink. He ponders whether the statues of Greek goddesses in the National Museum have anuses as do mortals. On leaving the pub Bloom heads toward the museum, but spots Boylan across the street and, panicking, rushes into the gallery across the street from the museum.

Artists’ Exchange
This project strand offered short residency opportunities in partner cities for 30 emerging artists as part of the legacy of this pan-European project.
Each city partner sent two artists on a residency to another partner’s city of a different art form, thereby seeking to enrich their professional practice through inter-disciplinary residencies. Artists were chosen on the basis of having demonstrated an interest in the hosting city’s Arts & Society contemporary European theme. They had to also practice a different art form from that of the hosting city’s public event. The project offered the emerging artists the opportunity to travel without the pressure to produce work and ideally to experience UEO’s public events.
