On 16th September, 2023 Leeuwarden opened its public event, SEX SHOOTER | The Liberation of Sexual Identity and Gender matters: stories from Istanbul. Kees van der Meiden, Director of Noorderlicht, welcomed the packed reception and explained why Hester Scheurwater was chosen to reinterpret Joyce’s episode XIII. Claudia Woolgar, Artistic Director of Brave New World Producties explained the ULYSSES European Odyssey project and, quoting from Ulysses, contexualised the two installations and their shifting perspectives – just as Gerty and Bloom’s contrasting voices reveal their hugely different positions. Turkish curator, Gülen Güler Hurley from Yalan Dünya Films in Istanbul was thanked for her work and word artist and ‘soft activist’, Mees van Rijswijk, performed two of his poems. The Municipality of Leeuwarden’s Councillor for Culture, Hein Kuiken, set the city and regional context, officially declaring the exhibition open. The exhibition is open to the public Wednesdays to Sundays, 11.00 – 18.00 in the Stationskwartier, Leeuwarden.
