Istanbul in Leeuwarden: Gizem Aksu

Choreographer and film director, Gizem Aksu, visited Leeuwarden for her residency.

It proved to be an amazing few days with Gulen Guler Hurley (curator of Gender matters: stories from Istanbul) also there from Yalan Dünya Films and Can Candan, director of My Child, which featured in the Gender matters exhibition. Sean Doran from Arts Over Border was also visiting at the same time.

During her visit Gizem’s film 9/8Fight41 was screened at Slieker Films (with a full film screening of Can’s film) and the Q&A prompted some moving discussions.

Gizem was also a guest during the symposium, organised by Noorderlicht, which explored issues around gender freedom with a fascinating talk by Mounir Samuel.

Whilst in Leeuwarden Gizem met local filmmaker Jaap Ruurd Feitsma and founders of Embrace Netherlands, Margot Hoiting and Philip Curtis. Gizem also reached out to a photography shop in town and we are intrigued to know why! All in all an insightful visit.
