City Rationale
The father and son motif of Ulysses is touched upon in this chapter by virtue of Stephen’s theory of Hamlet which he expatiates on in the setting of the National Library of Ireland. Caught between the whirlpool of abstraction and the rocks of material danger, Shakespeare combined the spiritual and the worldly, an aspiration also of Joyce’s. Hamlet was set in Elsinore (Helsingor), in north-east Denmark, and The University of Copenhagen is Denmark’s oldest university founded in 1479. Today over 94,000 students are enrolled in its largest universities and institutions. There are 20 public libraries in Copenhagen.
Ulysses Episode
At the National Library, Stephen explains to some scholars his biographical theory of the works of Shakespeare, especially Hamlet, which he argues are based largely on the posited adultery of Shakespeare’s wife. Bloom enters the National Library to look up an old copy of the ad he has been trying to place. He encounters Stephen briefly and unknowingly at the end of the episode.
Homer Odyssey Chapter
Book 12: Once they have passed the Sirens’ island, Odysseus and his men must navigate the straits between Scylla and Charybdis. Scylla is a six-headed monster who, when ships pass, swallows one sailor for each head. Charybdis is an enormous whirlpool that threatens to swallow the entire ship. As instructed by Circe, Odysseus holds his course tight against the cliffs of Scylla’s lair. As he and his men stare at Charybdis on the other side of the strait, the heads of Scylla swoop down and gobble up six of the sailors.

Artists’ Exchange
This project strand offered short residency opportunities in partner cities for 30 emerging artists as part of the legacy of this pan-European project.
Each city partner sent two artists on a residency to another partner’s city of a different art form, thereby seeking to enrich their professional practice through inter-disciplinary residencies. Artists were chosen on the basis of having demonstrated an interest in the hosting city’s Arts & Society contemporary European theme. They had to also practice a different art form from that of the hosting city’s public event. The project offered the emerging artists the opportunity to travel without the pressure to produce work and ideally to experience UEO’s public events.
