Joyce’s epochal work has a number of direct and indirect Hungarian connections and references. Beyond the specific connections, Ulysses can be used as an inspiration for the (re)discovery of the city of Budapest which celebrated the 150th anniversary of its unification in 2023, and for the creation of the Grand Novel of Budapest.
Through the creation process of the Grand Novel of Budapest, the UEO project used the tools of literature to reach out to, present and tell the stories, in many voices and in many different forms, of communities within a city composed of 23 districts. Following the wanderings of the heroes of the Odyssey and Ulysses, ordinary citizens were invited to explore and narrate their city. The Grand Novel of Budapest was based on shared thinking and collaboration, and to this end, potential partners were invited to an interactive workshop as the first step in a nearly two-year process. The aim was to discuss the concept of the Grand Novel, to address the questions that arose and to face any potential difficulties before the creative process started.
Summary:
A professional workshop took place on the opening day of the International Book Festival featuring thought-provoking presentations and which invited a large variety of stakeholders to contribute to the launch of the community-based creation of the Budapest Grand Novel.
